Elderly nun gang-raped by dacoits and looted money
In an incident, which was sent shock waves across the Country, a nun of a convent school was gang-raped by a group of miscreants in the in the early hours of Saturday. Some miscreants entered the Convent of Jesus and Mary at Ranaghat in Nadia district, West Bengal, India and looted as many as Rs.12 lakhs after tied up the security guard and then went on rampage inside the convent. During that time, she, who is the sister superior of the convent, tried to resist them and was allegedly gang-raped by them.
The nun’s condition is serious and has been admitted to the nearby hospital. This apart, three other sisters were beaten up by the armed men who had entered the convent.
Condemning the incident, Chief Minister of West Bengal - Mamata Banerjee said, “We have ordered a CID probe for the Ranaghat Convent incident. CID will be examining all aspects to this horrific crime. Swift, strongest action to be taken.” Minister for Urban Development - Firhad Hakim condemn this incident and said this was a heinous attack on the minority community. He also said the State is beside the sister and we will provide her support in all capacities and wanted capital punishment against the rapists. He also sought to link it to Sangh Parivar's 'Ghar Wapsi' programme.
Hours after the news broke, aggrieved students and their guardians of the convent, accompanied by locals staged massive protests amidst the city. They also blocked rail as well roads, including the National Highway. Sealdah bound trains from Ranaghat have been halted because of the massive protests.
Meanwhile, the Archbishop of Kolkata, Thomas D’Souza has condemned the whole incident. “We will identify the accused as we have the CCTV footage stored with the convent. The guilty must be punished. Such incidents have never happened in the history of our State,” said D’Souzas. The CCTV footage from inside the convent school campus has surfaced. According to the CCTV footage, three men are seen inside the staff room of the convent school. They are suspected to be rapists and Police is investigating the matter.
District Magistrate - P B Salim, who rushed to the spot, said it was a terrible act and police were already on the lookout for the gang members. "We are yet to get a full picture of the incident," he said. Also a team of members of the West Bengal Women’s Commission has reached Ranaghat.
