WCC congratulates newly elected Archbishop of Church of Sweden
Rev. Dr, Antje Jackelen, Bishop of Lund won 55.9% of the vote from the ecclesiastical college of the Church of Sweden which has 324 members. She will be the first female Bishop of the Lutheran church that calls about 2/3 of Sweden's population members. Her appointment was announced on Tuesday, October 15, 2013. Bishop Antje Jackelen will replace the current archbishop Anders Wejryd. Rev. Dr. Jackelen born in Herdecke, Germany was ordained a priest in the Church of Sweden in 1980 and became a doctor of theology at Lund University in 1999. She will be formally received during a worship service at Uppsala Cathedral in June 2014.
Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit’s Message
On behalf of the fellowship of the member churches of the World Council of Churches, the General Secretary of World Council of Churches (WCC), Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit has conveyed his best wishes and prayers for Rev. Dr Antje Jackelen on her appointment as Archbishop of the Church of Sweden. A Lutheran pastor and bishop in Lund in Southern Sweden, she is the first woman to hold this position.
In his message to Jackelen, Dr.Tveit said, “We are confident that your spiritual leadership will promote the ecumenical endeavours of the Church of Sweden, its mission work and theological contributions. We believe that your role as a church leader will be able to guide congregations and churches in your country and beyond for just and peaceful societies, with positive participation of both women and men. We hope for continuation of fruitful collaborations with the Church of Sweden under your leadership, strengthening our ecumenical relations which span a number of years”.
Dr.Tveit added, “I would like to offer my heartfelt prayers on the beginning of your new ministry as the first woman archbishop in the Church of Sweden. I pray that when you take up this new role, God’s empowering love will surround you, as you serve communities and deal with the challenges that churches in Sweden and Europe have to address”.
